The Velvin Journey

My obsession with building began as a young boy growing up in Hamilton, where I spent countless hours searching for the perfect tree on the Banks of the Waikato river, salvaging materials to construct increasingly elaborate treehouses. This early passion laid the foundation for what was to come.

From Treehouses to Award-Winning Homes

After a year studying Fine Arts at Massey University, I embarked on an overseas journey, funding my travels through building and labouring work. Upon my return to New Zealand in 2008, I chose Queenstown to begin my building apprenticeship through the BCITO.

Things progressed rapidly. The same day I qualified as a builder, I also learned I was going to be a father with my loving and supportive partner, Amber. Velvin Building was established in 2012, shortly before the birth of our second child. Amber has a Diploma in Architectural Design and we have collaborated on many projects over the years, culminating in the rewarding experience of building our own home in Jacks Point in 2016.

Highlights of the Journey

Queenstown proved to be an inspiring place to raise both a young family and a burgeoning business, offering abundant opportunities and amazing people. We now divide our time between the Coromandel and Queenstown, embracing the best of both regions.

I continue to thrive on the challenges my work presents, with each project being unique. It's incredibly rewarding to craft exceptional homes and forge the strong relationships within my Team, and the clients and contractors we work with. Over the past 13 years, a significant highlight has been winning the coveted Master Builders Craftsmanship Award in both 2024 and 2025 and being the national supreme winner for our renovation of a classic 70s A-frame in 2024. We eagerly anticipate the future of Velvin Building.
